Do you feel the influence much of an industry like Bollywood in your country?
"Not Bollywood… but Hollywood! The Philippines is the only country in Asia with a strong Latin vibe. We were a Spanish colony for over 300 years. Filipinos are very different from neighbouring Asian neighbours because of this Spanish vibe. Then the Americans came and stayed for half a century. They built cities and schools. Taught us English and gave us Hollywood. We have new retail and entertainment developments that look like Las Vegas. There’s a saying about our country – 300 years in a Spanish convent and 50 years in Hollywood.
Aesthetically, this Latin vibe has left a strong imprint in the Filipino psyche. There is an unshakable love for over-ornamentation – our local modes of transportation, the jeepney, tricycles and pedicabs are very colourful and highly-decorated. Beauty pageants are like a national sport. Minimalism would be very difficult to understand here. But I have to say, during the heyday of the Philippines in the 1960’s and 1970’s, Manila rode the post-Modernist era beautifully in terms of Brutalist architecture." >>> Read more
